Sarasota, FL: District 1 City Commissioner Willie Shaw (Vice Mayor) and District 1 County Commissioner Carolyn Mason unite to host a community forum. Updates will be provided on current City and County projects within District 1, including the latest community efforts to improve public safety.
A featured portion of the forum will be a report by Commissioner Shaw on his recent trip to High Point, North Carolina where he learned more about a unique community based initiative to reduce crime. Led by criminologist David Kennedy, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City, the High Point community used a multi-pronged approach to reduce crime. The approach includes using local pastors, social services, health services, probation, and economics. Vice Mayor Shaw will be seeking community volunteers to help launch a similar program in North Sarasota.
Since May 2011, Vice Mayor Shaw has served as the District 1 City Commissioner. He represents the City Commission on the Juvenile Justice Council of the Department of Justice/Juvenile Assessment Center Advisory Committee, the Sarasota County Community Action Agency Board, Enterprise Zone Redevelopment Agency and the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council.
County Commissioner Mason was elected to the Sarasota County Commission in 2008 to represent District 1. She currently serves as Vice Chair. She served on the Sarasota City Commission from 1999 to 2003, including serving as Mayor from 2001 to 2003.
